Gear Up For Hawks Basketball

Young Guys Don’t Have a Chance With Woodson

July 7th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

If you read my post before this one, you’ll know that I was predicting that the Hawks would not re-sign Mike Bibby.

I was wrong.

The Hawks re-signed Bibby to a three year deal on the first day of the free agent signing period. So, now the Hawks have at least three PGs (Bibby, Crawford and now Teague). If I know the way Coach Woodson coaches, Bibby will start, Crawford will come off the bench and Teague will not see the light of day.

Woodson plays veterans, doesn’t play rookies or young players. Heck, the only reason he has played Al Horford from the beginning is because Zaza is much better coming off the bench and the Hawks didn’t have a true center after him.

I really thought the Hawks would pass on Bibby, make Crawford the starter and have Teague come off the bench while learning the position and the league. The Hawks would be better off sending Teague to Utah of the NBDL, an Atlanta affiliate.

It’s sad, really, because Teague could really help this team and he won’t get to prove himself, just like other wasted opportunities with former Hawk draft picks Royal Ivey and Acie Law.

Woodson, to be blunt, needs to go.

You've obviously never been in management or fighting for your job beyond tomorrow. As I can recall the Hawks didn't have a lot of room
left to get into the playoffs. When you don't have enough talent to overwhelm the competition, you go with the girls that got you to the dance. In business, where your neck is on the line you go with what
will keep you in a job. That also means, that if you don't have a clearly outstanding difference maker on the floor you stay with the
    things you know.

Perhaps, if the Hawks were headed for a 60 win season you would have seen some of that other talent on the floor. That was not the case most of the nights that I watched them. They were fighting in most cases to hang on to the end of the game to come away with a win.

I guess I said all of that to say its real easy to see things from the comfort of your living room arm chair.
But, when you're doing it for your livelihood, we all tend to fall back to what our comfort level will allow us to risk each night out.

Just be fair with the coach.

    Thomas,
You're right. It is easy for me to judge when I'm at Philips Arena or watching them from the comfort of my home. I won't argue with you there.

My point is I'm worried that Teague won't be able to show what he can do in the NBA because Woodson likes to play the older players. Woodson uses a 7 man rotation. I have no problem with him using that rotation during the heat of the playoffs, but if the situation calls for it in the regular season, why not move Crawford over to the SG and put in Teague at point and give Bibby and Joe a rest.
